 Sunless Sea
Sunless SeaSunless Sea is a game created by Failbetter Games set in a universe they'd originally created through a different medium. Known as Fallen London, the world consists of a London that has collapsed into a cave and is now a part of a post-apocalyptic steampunk universe also known as the Unterzee- or "Under Sea", a massive lake that exists deep beneath the Earth. Fallen London was originally a browser based choose your own adventure text game in a gothic Victorian London. Sunless Sea has its rogue like elements, allowing you to build new characters with new stories each time you have a run through it. Death is permanent, and starts you over in the beginning again, though you can forcibly save while docked (therefore switching to 'Merciful Mode') and load whenever you wish. It ran like a top down, and you sailed the Unterzee in the hopes of finding treasure, success, completing your dreams, and essentially surviving. Real time combat replaced text-based combat over time, and the game feels polished and beautiful… And so very creepy. If you don't mind reading, you'll enjoy this game very, very much.
Backstage Pass
Backstage Pass is the name of a game that started development as early as two years ago, if not longer. Though it's development cycle was fairly long for an early access game, netting it some pretty angry reviews at times, the game was finally released August 22, 2016.
Standing at an impressive 16 endings to the game, Backstage Pass has quickly risen to be one of my all-time favorite visual novel dating sims. You play Sian Goodin, a young girl with mild panic-attack-inducing social anxiety who is very skilled with makeup- specifically, the entertainment industry's need for makeup. When an accident causes Sian to have a suddenly unstable college life, she hurries to get a job in the one thing she can already do- makeup. Along the way however, Sian meets 7 unique individuals that influence her life in many ways.
This game is a mold breaker. It represents many walks of life- from an asexual character, to a bisexual or pansexual character, to blatantly homosexual characters, and features the one thing I feel most visual novels today have been extremely lacking in: Some representation of actual gameplay.
There are many choices you'll make through this game, both ingame and without realizing it. You change your character's clothes based on what you're aiming for, and you can decide to have a Friendship ending, or a Romance ending- or even an Independent Ending. Romance or nomance, your character will have to decide how she spends her weeks in college and hope that she has enough money to survive- and hope she doesn't pass out from stress.
It's definitely a favorite of mine, and even shoots past its impressive predecessor, Re:Alistair++, a free game with three romanceable characters and a wonderfully entertaining plot.
If you're into story based games- and I do mean story, as a visual novel this game has a lot of reading- I would definitely play this game.
And for the record, I've completed two paths… And so far, John's my favorite.
